Sinéad O’Connor Reflects On Infamous ‘SNL’ Appearance In Trailer For New Documentary

A recently released trailer for Showtime‘s forthcoming documentary “Nothing Compares” sees Sinéad O’Connor reflecting on her controversial performance on “Saturday Night Live” almost three decades ago.

During her appearance on “SNL” on October 3, 1992, O’Connor protested the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church by tearing up a photo of Pope John Paul II and threw the pieces toward the camera, saying, “Fight the enemy.”

“I had come across an article about families who had been trying to lodge complaints against the church for sexual abuse and were being silenced,” O’Connor recalls in the trailer. “Basically everything I had been raised to believe was a lie,” the singer explains of her thought process for the performance. She adds, “An artist’s job is sometimes to create difficult conversations that need to be had. That’s what art is for. They tried to bury me. They didn’t realize I was a seed.”

O’Connor noted in the trailer, “I wasn’t thinking to myself I must be strong. I didn’t know I was strong. An artist’s job is sometimes to create the difficult conversations that need to be had. That’s what art is for.”

The documentary will be available for streaming and on-demand on September 30 in the U.S. and on October 7 in U.K. cinemas.
